Market Update November 23rd

Air

With the uptick in COVID cases, some carriers have experienced a drop in available personnel, impacting their ability to respond to inquiries. Janel Group confirms Polar Air in LAX and British Airways in Edinburgh offices as being unusually affected. Response times are delayed and, in some cases, have minimized flights into Edinburgh airport with alternative services through Glasgow until staff can safely return to work.

Ocean

TPWC: Most ocean carriers implemented a soft GRI on 11/15, matching our projection of $100-150/FEU.

Capacity and space remain limited despite an increase in supply, as additional capacity has been met with equal demand. We are increasing our recommended lead time for advanced booking from 14 to 21 days minimum to secure space on a planned sailing.

Regarding our reports of equipment shortage, carriers are now offering discounts for non-40’ container equipment, such as 20’ and 45’ containers. NOR and carrier premium services are options worth considering.

A wide range of additional service options should be explored to mitigate capacity and equipment shortage issues. Your Janel Group representative would be happy to discuss these options if you are experiencing issues with bookings or equipment.

The U.S. Market

As congestion and equipment shortage continue through most of the West Coast, we are hearing reports of increased mandatory COVID quarantines, resulting in a port personnel shortage.

Congestion, capacity, and equipment shortage across the U.S. (and all markets) is affecting export supply chain and we expect this to continue through year’s end.
